Ben Gutenberg is the person who researches, writes, and maintains Restaurants1.
The idea behind the site is simple: help people who already know what they want. Not just “where can I eat,” but “where can I eat this, in this setting, in this city.” A waterfront table for fresh seafood. A rooftop for a special night. A patio where the dog is welcome. A private room for a group. Generic review sites answer those specific questions badly, so Ben started building guides that answer them directly.
How the guides are made
Every guide on Restaurants1 is put together the same careful way, and that process is where its authority comes from:
- Independent, with no pay-for-placement. No restaurant can buy a spot or a ranking. Every place is included only because it genuinely fits the guide.
- Verified against official sources. For each restaurant, Ben confirms it is currently open, and checks the address, neighborhood, price range, and hours against the restaurant’s own information and other reliable sources. Any link is confirmed to work before it goes on the site.
- The feature has to be real. If a guide is about waterfront seafood, dog-friendly patios, or private dining rooms, the restaurant is confirmed to genuinely offer it, not assumed from a name or a single photo.
- Short, honest lists. Each guide is a tight, curated set rather than a directory dump. When a combination does not have enough real options in a city, the guide says so instead of padding the list.
- Kept current. Restaurants change constantly, so each guide carries a “last updated” date and is rechecked on a regular cycle. Closed places are removed or replaced.

Corrections and suggestions
Details can still change between a check and your visit, so it is always worth confirming with the restaurant before you go. If you spot something wrong, out of date, or closed, or you know a place that should be considered, reach Ben through the contact page. Every message is read, and the site is updated quickly.
